TreeHugger is no stranger to discussions on how best to travel lightly on this earth. Shanpu Ya and colleagues at the Polymer Science & Engineering College of Quingdao University of Science & Technology in China have applied for a patent on a biodegradable polystyrene. They embed water-absorbing resin particles which expand when in contact with water, reducing the polystyrene to powder that they say should then biodegrade. They say it is actually cheaper than conventional foamed polystyrene, so it ” should therefore be readily adopted by cost-conscious companies that also want to be environmentally responsible.” We suppose this is progress. However when we have to throw out this stuff we still have to deal with the volume it takes in our garbage bags, the … Read more at: Tough Love: Disintegrating Polystyrene

New York based designer Sara Kirsner continues to expand her gorgeous Doie fashion line with the launch of her Fall ’07 collection. We love the simple, elegant Doie style which combines soft bamboo jersey fabric with oriental silk. This formula is proving to be endlessly versatile, running from nightwear and sportswear to casual day and chic evening pieces. It is a testament to Kirsner’s design talent that she can make each collection new and refreshing using only two fabrics types and some wonderful pattern cutting. Fish is a source of healthy omega-3 fatty acids, but unfortunately because of the pollution in our waters, fish and other seafoods also contain toxins such as mercury and PCBs. Then there’s also the issue of overfishing, and the debate between wild-caught and farm-raised fish to consider. So how do you know what fish choose?
To help you sort out the “good” fish from the “bad” fish, Environmental Defense has created the Seafood Selector. Whether you’re in a restaurant or the seafood department of the grocery store, the Seafood Selector will guide you through your purchase.

Who: Zee Dynamics is a startup with a patent-pending technology that supposedly reduces the amount of fuel and energy used in the production of rubber products such as shoes and tires, and can also make the rubber last longer. The company is self-funded by founder John Carcich, who says he has invested about a half million dollars.
Why: According to the EPA, there are at least 275 million scrap tires in stockpiles in the U.S. Meanwhile, every year ?millions of pairs? of shoes end up in landfills. Even companies like athletic retailer Nike realize disposing of all these rubber-soled shoes isn?t good for the environment.

The green-themed party is almost over in Black Rock desert, Nevada. Festival-goers at the annual Burning Man event are packing up their tents and festivity gear ? think flame throwers and art projects ? today for the last day of this year?s festival. The man might have gone ablaze early this year, but burners had all week to focus on various examples of cleantech and renewable energy technology.
World Changing points out that 87% of the festival generators were supposed to be run on B100 biodiesel (11,000 gallons), while over 50 theme camps are using biodiesel after festival organizers negotiated with local vendors.

Co-producer Lesley Chilcott used an online calculator to estimate that shooting the film used 41.4 tons of carbon dioxide and paid a middleman, a company called Native Energy, $12 a ton, or $496.80, to broker a deal to cut greenhouse gases elsewhere. The film’s distributors later made a similar payment to neutralize carbon dioxide from marketing.
